How to Select and Specify your Concrete Pole.

1. Determine the height of the luminaire above ground level. (e.g. 25')

2. Determine the attachment(s) to be mounted on the pole. You will need the EPA (Effective Projected Area) and horizontal distance from the pole to each attachment. (e.g. A lamp with an EPA of 9 ft² mounted on a 6' elliptical arm)

3. Find the wind speed for your geographical area using the map provided. (e.g. Cleveland: 90 mph)

4. Find the class of pole required for the total EPA and the horizontal loadings (from #2 above) using the graphs provided. (e.g. 90 mph graph, 9 ft² on the x-axis, 6' on the y-axis will give a point on the graph above class B and below class C, therefore a class C pole is required).

5. Determine the mounting method. (e.g. direct embedment, base mounted, etc.)

6. Calculate the length of the pole including the height of the luminaire and the mounting method. (e.g. direct burial typically requires 10% of the pole length plus 2'. Our 25' pole requires 2 1/2' plus 2' = 4 1/2' to be buried giving a total pole length of 29 1/2'. The closest size is a 30 ft pole.). Some jobs may require special design considerations due to local requirements or soil conditions.

7. Select the shape (e.g. round, octagonal), color and finish of the pole. (e.g. A standard street light may be round, gray with a natural finish).

8. Select the required finish for the tip of the pole (e.g. cap).

9. Select any accessories required for the pole including electrical grounding, hand holes, cable holes, caps, electrical outlets.

10. Use the Sky Cast Product Logic code to specify your pole. Remember to specify any additional accessories.
